BatteryLife Activator

The Battery Life Activator promises more talk time, longer stand-by time, shorter charging time and a longer battery life. When promises like this are made, one can't help but be a little skeptical. We were sent two models, one for mobile phones and one for notebooks.

According to Batterylife, the Activator will give you up to:

- 30% more talk time
- 30% longer stand-by time
- 40% shorter charging time
- 30% longer battery lifetime

The Activator pad looks and feels like an ordinary sticker. You attach it to the rechargeable battery and according to the instructions, after 5 to 10 discharge/charge cycles a noticeable improvement in stand by time should be apparent. We were a little skeptical how what appears to be a sticker could claim these results. BatteryLife gave us a small amount of information about how the Activator is supposed to work.

"Lithium Ion (Li-Ion) cells deteriorate when fragments of the electrodes start to break off due to the expansion/contraction that happens during charging and discharging. These fragments go into the electrolyte and hinder the normal flow of ions making a higher resistance path. Gradually the resistance gets so high (usually after 2 years) that the battery can no longer deliver enough current even after charging. The Activator creates around it a high density of ions. The ion density around the material has been measured at 7000-8000 ions per cm3 compared to 200-300 per cm3 in normal air. These ions have an effect on the cell and actually reverse the fragmentation process or at the very least nullify the effects." - Graham Jackson, EuroBizz PR

We decided to see if the Activator could live up to its claims. We conducted two sets of tests, one with a Nokia mobile phone and one with an IBM notebook. In both cases, we only focused on stand-by time.
