For a long time, the Seagate Barracuda has enjoyed a reputation as the quietest
hard drive available, since Seagate were the first to use fluid bearings for
the platters. Fluid bearings are now used by the world and his dog, but the
Barracuda is still one of the quietest drives in this group test.
The model we have here is the 200 GB SATA version. Performance is fair, with
a seek time of 7.7 ms, and a PC Mark score of 4432, which is about average.
At 44 p per gigabyte, value for money is also average. The drive runs a little
on the hot side, at 52 degrees. This rules out the possibility of using a drive
enclosure to cut noise further, but it hardly needs it. This is a competent
hard drive, and very suitable for a workstation or home machine where noise
is an issue.
