My next issue was one of power. A lot of these eden boxes I've seen or ITX
style systems use either an external power supply or have terrible trouble with
their PSU installing. I was lucky enough to find this case already accomodated
a PSU, but of the AT variety - no problem, just switch out the PCB!
So off I went hunting for a micro-atx psu from an e-machine or similar. I went
into one shop and they had a box of PSU's for $5 and guess what, they had an
e-machine psu! I took it to the counter and asked them to test it for me and
was sad to find out it was broken :( We started talking and told them all about
Spode's Abode and asked if I could buy it cheaper becuase it was broken and
he said their policy was to throw them away.... Then in a loud voice he said
"in fact, I'm going to throw it away in this bin RIGHT NEXT TO THE DOOR".
Well, we laughed and then took it home right after purchasing one of those foldable
membrane keyboards from them. We powered up the PSU using a paperclip and BAM!
It worked! Nothing wrong with it, sounds like their testing routine needs a
testing routine done on it :D

As you can see, the PCB's are very similar in size. You may
also notice the inbuilt 80mm fan into the case, the IEC plug for power and
the on/off switch. ALL of which can be re-used. You may also notice the
convenietly placed hole on the bottom-right perfect for popping the ATX
connector through to power the motherboard that will be on the lower level. |
| Although the PCB's where similar in size, the holes didn't quite line
up so we had to drill a couple of our own. To stop the board shorting out,
we cut a couple of small peices of vinyl tube to act as spacers and put
these inbetween the board and case. |

A perfect fit. All it needed now was a quick dab with the soldering iron
to solder the main's leads to the board and some more soldering to get the
fan to spin up (at 7v no less). You can also see the 120/240 volt switch
there, I needed this becuase I would be running it in both the US while
I was staying there and in the UK when I was living there. Becuase I won't
need to use it much, I left it internel instead of mounting it. |
