Corsair were one of the first companies to announce the availability
of DDR-2 memory, even before there were motherboards ready to take it. Not only
this, their memory exceeds the JEDEC standards laid down for a frequency of
667MHz, with timings of 4-4-4-12 instead of the suggested 5-5-5-15. We were
impressed to find that this memory was quite happy to run at 600MHz with a CAS
rating of 3, although CAS4 didn't seem to have a huge performance impact.
These modules have the heat spreaders we have come to expect from Corsair with
a sleek smooth black finish, which do little but add to the eye candy.
With current motherboards, reaching the guaranteed speed, let alone exceeding
it, is a task in itself. Buying this memory would certainly mean you would never
have to worry about memory being the bottleneck in your system, but it may overkill.
In saying this, with 1066MHz Pentium 4 processors now available, this make be
just the ticket.
£280 is a lot of money for 1 Gigabyte of memory and certainly doesn't
offer enough benefit over a cheaper set of DDR 400 or even DDR2 533 to justify
the extra cost.
The main question you have to ask yourself, is if you should be buying DDR-II
at all, with it's future in question. You may be better off with a 915 based
platform and DDR400, or even better, buying the superior Athlon 64.
