This matched pair of DIMMs from Kingmax are fairly close to standard
specification, only rated for DDR400 at CAS2.5. Obviously these have the bonus
of being guaranteed to work in a dual channel configuration and the slightly
lower latency, but at first glance they do not seem to be high performance DIMMs.
However, the pair we had for testing seemed happy to overclock somewhere in
the region of 240MHz, with conservative timings. It seems that despite the low
quoted specifications, good quality memory chips will always result in reasonably
good overclocking.
As the picture shows, the modules we have on test have a gold PCB, but it seems
this has recently been changed to red. There are no heat spreaders, but there
really is no need for them at all, being nothing but a gimmick.
At a cost of £136 for a Gigabyte, these modules are only slightly more
costly than buying generic RAM. These test samples have been used in our labs
for many months now, and must have been inserted and removed from a hundred
DIMM slots. Despite this heavy use and abuse, they have been perfectly reliable.
This quality alone justifies spending a little more on your memory.
