Modifying a Geforce to Quadro

Okay before I start this article, I will praise this link - I am not sure of the homepage, but using the information I found on there, made this possible.

So what is a Quadro? If you take a quick browse on the Nvidia Website, you will see that the Quadro is a graphics card designed for proffesional 3D work, so if you want more games performance, this is not for you. If you take a look at the bottom of the Nvidia website, there is a comparison of the Geforce 256 to the Quadro - here it is.

Feature
GeForce 256
Quadro
Fill Rate
480 Mpix
540 Mpix
Triangle Rate
15Mtris
17Mtris
AA Lines
No
Yes
Two-sided Lighting
No
Yes
Shared Back Buffer
No
Yes
3D Window Clipping
No
Yes
128 MB Frame Buffer
No
Yes
Pro App Validation
No

All these features are those that would be used in 3d Applications such as 3D Studio Max and Bryce. So how can moving a few resistors enable all these features?

This is my theory, by making the computer think its a Quadro, the Nvidia drivers enable these features by software (like FSAA is). But the enhanced fill rate and triangle rates are just the results of the chip being higher clocked. So perhaps it is possible, instead of cracking the card, crack the drivers to get the same effect? Just a thought. (Update: As I thought, this has now been done - a long time after my suggestion!)

So how do you do it? Well the best guide is on the original link, I found that the layout for the Chaintech was the same as my Leadtek luckily. If you try this, tell me eh?

Okay, if yours is not on this list, this is my general guide, but be careful.

*** THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY, BAD SOLDERING CAN POTENTIALLY DAMAGE YOUR BOARD ***

This picture from the original site is identical to my leadtek. If you look at it, it is basically like a set of jumpers, you just gotta move em across. My advice if you don't know the specific guide to your board is look around for areas that look like this, if its near where your TV out should be (if you don't have it like me), then ignore it. Take an intelligent guess at it. If your not sure, don't do it. I tried about every single combination of those resistors and had TNT, DDR, SDR and Quadro!! So getting the sequence wrong ain't gonna hurt it, but the WRONG resistors will!!
