Phillips' 19" offering is an almost identical specification to the Sharp monitor, with a 500:1 contrast ratio, 16ms response time, and 1280x1024 native resolution. Short of cracking them open, we could almost suggest the panels are identical.

The colour and clarity of the monitor are good, but viewing angle is again quite limited, which seems to be the trend for all but the most expensive quick response monitors. Unfortunately it isn't the best choice for gaming, since although it scales well to 800x600, 1024x768 looks very bad indeed.

At £256, it is one of the cheapest low response 19" monitors you will find, and so its feature list is sparse, with no DVI input, speakers, or USB hub.

It also has a light plastic base, like many of the 17" monitors in the group test. This doesn't mean it is unstable, but you have to grip it with both hands to adjust it. The Philips 190S5 is a good monitor, and quite possibly shares the same LCD panel as the Sharp LL-191A, but you may find it is worth paying the little extra for the Sharp model which has better scaling and a sturdier base.
