This 17" LCD doesn't have half of the impressive looks or sheer presence of its 20" big brother, but it costs half the price, and has an even lower response time, at a lightning fast 12ms. This response time puts it almost on par with an 85Hz CRT monitor, but you would have to be quite a power gamer to notice a difference between 12 ms and the more common 16 ms, especially considering the 75Hz refresh rate limitation.

The 17" screen with its tiny stereo speakers moves easily on its weighted plastic stand, and it can be easily moved around and adjusted with one hand. The control buttons are small, cheap looking, and difficult to press. The VG712S is quite well specified though, including analogue and DVI inputs, and a contrast ratio of 450:1.

The monitors automatic adjustment is slightly off, and you have to fiddle with both the colour balance and timing yourself. Scaling is good though, with both 1024x768 and 800x600 looking fine on the 1280x1024 panel. £243 inc. VAT is a reasonable price for a 17" TFT. This is worth consideration for FPS junkies, but everyone else would be better off with the bigger, and clearer 19" Aries AL190, which can be had for the same money.
