Over in Switzerland, 9000 PCs have made the switch from Windows to Linux, after a period of dual booting. When I hear about the decisions other European countries make correctly, it makes me want to emigrate, just so my eventual children get a decent deal.
Karl and I were talking about GIMP and Kino last night, and came to the conclusion that although both are technically capable, they both lack in the interface department. If the Government spent £200,000 a year, they could employ a few coders to work full time on improving the interfaces on these softwares and in under a year, we'd have two excellent photo editing and video editing packages. I wonder what job I need to apply for, in order to make such a decision ![]()
The Inquirer has a nice piece on impending fuel cells in our mobile devices, and science daily suggests that dogs have no concept of time passing - which would explain why you never hear them complaining about public transport.
Erm, I will try again! About 100 words have just disappeared of the page?!!! I must be hitting some key that resets everything?
That's great news Spode, the Swiss tweaking up and getting the school kids to use Linux. This will be a bit annoying to Microsoft I expect, but I have little sympathy for the reasons you already know. Slightly off topic, but relevant I thing is Bill Gates giving a very broad hint about yet another Windows. Windows 7. According to the man himself, it will be released in a year, the trade say on past records it will be two at least. What madness! What a stupid move, it's not the best way to sell Vista is it. I'm wondering whether this is what Vista should have been. Who knows? That’s Just another reason to avoid buying Microsoft's latest offering.
I like the fuel cell idea for mobile phones and the like. It conjured up pictures of people carrying small bottles of Vodka around to fill their mobile phones.
At last, Ethanol is being used for something useful.
I'm not so sure about dogs and other lower life forms not having a sense of time, owning dogs and cats, it seems to me they do have a very good memory and sense of time. This may just be like AI on a super computer, giving that impression. Apart from a purely academic subject, I can't see the point of the study. Perhaps someone can enlighten me. You are right about dogs etc not complaining about public transport, perhaps they're just more patient than us.
Lastly whist watching TV last night A comment was made in an advertising filler about there being only one Monopolies commission?

Woah-woah-woah. Government backed software projects? On time? On budget? Strictly Not Possible, Sir. ![]()
Why not?
Takes to long to figure out who to pay off. ![]()
Dog owners, who have noticed that their four-legged friend seem equally delighted to see them after five minutes away as five hours, may wonder if animals can tell when time passes.
Errrm... That's just blatantly not true from my experience. In fact the reception of an dog to your arrival seems to be directly proportional to how long you've been away, be it minutes, hours or weeks.
Well, not being a dog owner - I wouldn't know. Just quoting the article!
Spode, we are only questioning the article, as with many hare brained researches in to why things are, like why are logs kind of brown and roundish! It seems the people that do this kind of thing. They just apply for a grant add the words "Global warming","Carbon dioxide" and the cash appears forthwith. A good gravy train to jump on and why not if you can get away with it!
How many loony ideas can you remember being read on the news. Example: "After many years of research and delving in to thousands of medical books, it's been realised that there is no proper name for the back of the knees" ![]()
