at PC World.Something I don't think I've mentioned previously, is my membership to the Kent Linux User Group (or KLUG) mailing list. One thing I love about this mailing list, is there is a mixture of all abilities, so you'll see both complex and simple questions being asked and answered, informative links to articles that might interest and hearty debates that conjure images of 4ft long beards and a sensitivity to bright light.
As well as the mailing list, there are "social" events organised, as well as official KLUG Meets. Strangely, I've not been able to attend a social, but I have been to several of the meets. Rather than a squabble of geek talk (not that I object to this) there is a structure to each meet, usually a talk put on by one of the members on a topic that the rest of the group felt had a global appeal, followed by as much geek talk as you can fit into the remaining time.
This month, I was able to secure a venue in Ashford, where Karlson Buckland (Sirkent on the forums) gave a talk on MythTV.

As Karl and I have been using MythTV for quite some time, the impact of its beauty has perhaps worn off somewhat. Seeing the astonished faces at the event was a stark reminder of exactly how powerful MythTV is, and how good an impression it can make. Karl gave an excellent presentation, providing a concise overview of all areas including live demonstrations, with the details filled in thanks to a thorough Q&A session.
There are LUGs all around the UK, so if you do have an interest in Linux, it is worth joining one. There really are people of all ages and abilities, so fitting in is never a problem. Certainly for the Kent LUG, the venue moves around Kent so that there are equal opportunities for people to turn up. Find your local group on the main UK LUG website. With any luck, you'll make some friends, improve your Linux knowledge and possibly get involved in an Open Source project!
I'm not impressed by your photo - I'm blurred!
I believe the presentation will be available on the Kent LUG website soon. Shame nobody recorded it!
I thought it was recorded?
KLUG is actually a funny short form. Being "klug" means being smart (in German) *ggg*.
I was trying to stream the meeting live with my 3G card using www.stickam.com and record it.
However the two people how were listening in said it was very choppy and stickam deleted my saved video.
I emailed their support asking why but have not heard back yet.
I think I need faster 3G. Turbo 3G ![]()
I don't think the "live" element is that important - it's not as if they can join in the debate. So a decent recording that can be uploaded might work better next time ![]()
Next time you do something like this, you need a video camera. I have a digital one with firewire I used to record my bro's wedding...
...and a tripod...
Handbrake then makes an xvid out of it, and you're sorted.
Sussex Linux Users Group......
