My burner is dying and it cost me my recent backup of photos. :( I did not lose too much but what I did lose, I wish I hadn't. I am looking at AOpen and Philips drives. I have not paid much attention to what is going on in the market and have no idea where to start. I know I don't want anything fancy. Dual layer burning is nice but not essential. The media is too expensive anyway.

Is it essential you can burn on the go? If not, why not get an external drive - they are more reliable and will last longer.

Not essential but I'd rather have the option of taking it along without too much hassle.

The Pioneer K06 is a very good drive - I have one, and so do lots of people. It's slot-loading so it's fairly noisy in operation (if you're bothered about that, there is a not-slot-loading one). Samsung drives are good too.

The slot load Pioneer is attractive.

I found a Samsung SN-S082H for a pretty decent price with OEM Nero 8, which is a plus.

I think I am getting the Samsung. Seems decent enough. Unless I can find one of those slot load Pioneers with burning software. I do have a concern with the bezel working with my laptop though. It looks like quite a few people complain about it not fitting right.

I discovered that my laptop has a custom bezel; however, if you get a similar tray-loading one you should be able to detach the bezel (carefully!) from the old one and put it on the new one to get a perfect fit.

Yeah, I've come across the same problem before.

Lolly, do you have the stock bezel on that Pioneer? If so, what are the dimensions?

Awe man. Now I have a deal on an external USB 2.0 Pioneer DVR-X122 18x DVD±RW DL w/ Nero 7 essentials, a 50 pack spindle of DVD+R's, Disc destroyer and label system for the same price as the Samsung. Argh! I don't really want an external but this is a steal! I am going to have to revisit the desk configuration to see if I can make this work. It may be worth the hassle of an external burner.

Thanks Lolly. I went ahead and ordered the external Pioneer. I am going to have to put a little table or a shelf next to the laptop desk for some extra space. Maybe upgrade my laptop bag. :P .
