I have been looking into the possibility of getting a windows based PDA. I have my Sony Clie (Palm OS based) and I think I have outgrown it. (16MB memory w/ a 64MB card is putting the squeeze on me). The only thing is that I am not sure if windows based PDA's will sync with Ubuntu. I have been researching it on the Ubuntu forums and it looks like its hit and miss with the available conduits.

Has anyone here tried using a Win based PDA with Linux? I do realize that if I get one, I have the option of replacing the OS with a Linux based OS. I am not sure if I am ready for that yet. Seems like a lot of effort to get it working.

But why would you ever want to ditch Palm OS? It's brilliant!

My only impressions of Windows Mobile devices is that they are SLOW in comparison - it really bugged me, so I went back to Palm with the Centro.

well with my 40 mhz processor, anything faster be it windows or palm will be noticeable for one. I really have not looked at any Palm OS stuff since Palm got bought out or whatever happened to them.

I don't know why I did not consider Palm. Huh. :erm:

Looking at a Palm TX now.

My question would be - why a PDA? A modern phone will do everything a PDA did/can.

The Centro is great - same hardware as my old Treo 650 (which was also the same hardware as the Tungsten E but with an additional phone chip) which is no bad thing as it's no slouch. It also supports microSD up to 2GB and has a qwerty keyboard and things. I made a post about it a while back.

Just make sure you get a protective hard case for it (e.g. the Seidio Crystal shell) because I broke the screen on mine within weeks by contortion stress just having it in my pocket.

It's also a lot cheaper than a T|X, apparently from only $99 on a contract over there. Mine was £200 SIM free. Try to get the GSM version if you can as it's more compatible with other networks (no CDMA anywhere except the USA).

I am currently locked to my current phone until the end of this year. I don't know. I am old fashioned. I like my phone separate from my PDA. I hate smudging the screen from putting it up to my face. I have a blue tooth headset for my phone but I hardly use it. The smudges annoy the heck out of me.

With the protective cover, the screen doesn't smudge due to the 1mm offset! :)

Tried one over the weekend and the keyboard is just way too small for my hands. My fingers cramped up almost instantly. :( The layout of the LG Rumor's keyboard is better for my hands but it lacks the PDA like stuff I want.

I kinda always regretted getting a windows mobile PDA. It was (and kinda still is) top of the range, but it's still slow, prone to crashing, and updating it to the latest windows mobile made things 10x worse...

It's not made anymore. And if I didn't rely on tomtom on it so much, I'd have dropped Linux on it aaaages ago. It'd make a great media player (got a 4GB SD card for it years ago, along with a double sized battery, extra docking stations - you name it, I got it...)
