at PC World.I did, yes it's true, I really did ride a rather splendid bicycle with suspension and enough gears to shake a stick of memory at. OK, it was only in a garage yard with a good friend close by my side to save me from almost certain disaster, but I did actually ride it for several tens of metres.
What's so special I hear you all thinking, well, that for me was a minor miracle. I last managed to ride one in 1976!
All I have to do now is learn to walk without falling over. Oh yes, I'm feeling so much better. ![]()
It's funny how simple things in life become milestones when they get taken from you by your health...
Yay for bicycles! I've just greased mine up and put it upside-down in the loft as it won't be used for a year.
Riding a bicycle is a bit like riding a bicycle - you never forget.
Spode, do you know anything about folding bikes? I'm thinking about buying a Brompton, probably the ML3. http://www.brompton.co.uk/content.asp?p=3&l=1 The aim is to cover 8-10 miles a day, to and from tube station.
If I get one of these will I forever regret not buying a proper bike?
The Bromptons are lovely bikes that hold their value well. Most others on the market feel like cheap imitators really. The DAHON 26" model is quite nice, but obviously larger - but almost indiscernible from a normal bike.
I've personally never ridden a Brompton for that sort of distance, and I would be considering a DAHON instead. Best bet is to try one out - with the smaller wheels, you'll find the steering a little funny ![]()
Thanks. I've looked at the Dahon, but it's substantially larger than the Brompton when folded. As I'd probably be hopping on and off buses/trains with it a fair bit, that might be a problem. I shall go and look in a shop tomorrow. It's a lot of money to spend, so I want to get it right!
Well, if you're hopping on and off a lot of buses - take into account the time it's going to take to fold it!

And how much space it takes up when trying to get through ticket barriers, up and down escalators etc..
Well, I've ordered a Brompton.
Unfortunately, there's a six week wait on all orders. ![]()
Lorna - have you been using your Brompton then? I'm investigating the possibility of using a bike on my train commute to Edinburgh. As it is, it'll take me 25 mins to walk to the train station and then have to stand around and wait for a crowded bus to Leith at the other end. Add to that the nightmare of tramworks on Leith Walk, and a bike sounds like a better solution!
I haven't used it on my commute yet, only for trial trips to the supermarket, or post office etc. There are many reasons for this, the main ones being it's cold and wet outside during the winter and also that I'm quite lazy. Once the weather warms up a bit I will give it a go.
My conclusion so far is that it was a helluva lot of money to spend on something I'm using at most once a month. It does fit nicely in the cupboard under the stairs though, and I'm getting such a rubbish interest rate on my savings now that I don't feel quite so guilty about squandering the cash.
