I was just wondering why trolls roam IRC and discussion rooms. I mean, what are they after?

I ran into one on a camera channel recently. I used some incorrect terminology - but everyone knew what I was talking about. I mean, after all, I admitted up front that I'd never tried the technique I was talking about, but I wanted to. So trollboi decides to take it upon himself to show me the error of my ways.

I tried taking it off-channel, but he just posts what I said to him in a PM into the main channel, and continues to bash away at me. At this point it becomes clear to me that this guy isn't about correcting the n00b, he's about making the n00b look foolish in order to make himself look big and clever.

Now, I gotta ask, do trolls honestly believe that people will fall down and worship them when they do this? Trolls - do you not realise that when you attempt to make yourselves look clever at the expense of another, all you actually accomplish is to make everyone around feel sorry for the guy you're attacking, and make everyone think that there must be something massively important missing in your life that makes you feel the need to humiliate a complete stranger...

Or, to put it another way, what exactly are you compensating for? What inadequacy are you trying to cover up? What massive gaping black hole in your person are you trying to fill? You need to stop. Your actions are self-defeating.

Unfortunately, the internet is full of a lot of faceless people that feel it is their duty to do such things.

There are some real idiots out there, however, I find it difficult enough to moderate myself when I'm face to face. Without the benefit of body language and vocal inflection, I'm sure I've offended people without meaning too.

I know I have! Things I've typed that were meant in a friendly, constructive manner have come across as bossy, rude or inconsiderate thanks to the wonders of modern technology.

On the other hand, I've never attacked someone for being less knowledgeable than myself. I honestly do wonder if these people think others think highly of them when they make someone look stupid. Do they think we all look on in awe, marvelling at them as beacons of intellectual prowess?

I'm highly offended by the way you misspelt "to" as "too". Kindly correct this mistake immediately, otherwise I will be forced to take legal action due to your misrepresentation of your opinion.

    :P

That's not a mistake you'd want to make to many times.
