at PC World.Well, I started with the replacement of my Sansa's firmware. Then I moved to my Cowon iAudio X5L. Now I have moved to replacing the stock firmware on my router. I installed Tomato a couple of nights ago and had to actually revert back to the Linksys firmware (Have a WRT54GL (ver1.1)). I could not find the option to do MAC cloning in Tomato and therefore could not get on the online after the upgrade. My wife was needing the internet for some business so I had to go back and try again later.
Last night I tried again. This time I found the MAC cloning portion of the firmware and was online with my Tomato powered router within minutes. I guess the first time I was kind of tired because the option was right under my nose.
The part I am excited about is the scripts that can be run on the router. I have an ad block script running right now. It is basically using host files from three different sources, eliminating duplicate entries and updating the files every six hours. I have no need to run ad blocking software on my wifi connected WinXP laptop anymore!
There are so many new options to play with I am still exploring. I might try DD-WRT to but Tomato is doing a pretty good job as far as I can tell.
Take a peek at Tomato here: http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato
DD-WRT is pretty good. Actually, it's excellent; it can, among other things, add wireless repeater functionality without the need for a cable (i.e. it can connect wirelessly to another router and transparently share the network on both ends) to the WRT54G - something which, for some unknown reason, is a function that doesn't appear on standard routers, which means you have to get extremely expensive specialist equipment if you want it.
Unfortunately there are several versions of the WRT54G series and the GL v1.1 is one of the more crippled ones, but you might be able to run DD-WRT micro on it (but check the compatibility list).
I use DD-WRT here - love it.
I looked at DD-WRT and it looks like my router is supported under the generic 54G version of the firmware. I am going to play with Tomato a little more.
I like the transceiver power tweaking options. ![]()
You'd actually be surprised about the power options - many people get better rates by LOWERING this.
Yeah, because if you raise the power level, you also raise the noise floor. Which in turn makes it less effective.
