I am considering purchasing a Fujitsu Stylistic LT C-500 tablet PC. It has very meager specs compared to modern gear but all I want it for is web browsing and the occasional spreadsheet entry (personal finances).

It is a Celeron 500 with 128MB RAM, upgradeable to 256MB. I have heard of people putting 512MB in it but I can’t confirm this because all the documentation I have read says 256MB is the max. 6GB hard drive, 8.4” LCD display, PCMCIA slot with a WIFI card installed. 1 USB port, 1 CF flash port, IR port, Mic in and Headphone out are all standard. The eBay store is also including a carrying case.

It has Win2K Pro installed. I explored the possibilities of making it an Ubuntu box but the stories I have read are discouraging because of the touch screen not working properly. I can live with Win2K Pro until someone gets the touch screen working.

I looked at a video review I found on Youtube and it seems pretty peppy for what I would be using it. I think I can also make it a nifty looking music player or media remote. The eBay store I am looking at has it for $116 USD, shipped. They have several of them. What do you think? Is it worth investing in old tech like this? Should I skip the tablet and get an EeePC? Maybe a UMPC that looks more tablet’ish? I am leaning towards something more like a tablet rather than a mini laptop, I think.

Here is Fujitsu's page on the LT500: http://www.fujitsupc.com/www/products_pentablets.shtml?products/pentablets/stylistic_c500

What are your reasons for wanting it to be a tablet, over a traditional input mechanism?

Mainly because of the touchscreen. It would make it a lot easier to integrate as a media remote with the touchscreen capabilities as seen here:

I like the form factor also. It makes it really easy to use as a book reader.

For that sort of price - give it a go :)

Well, I was going to get it but my vacuum cleaner broke down on Saturday. :( So, the money I had set aside for the tablet has been spent on a new vacuum cleaner. :( Oh well, I'll just delay the purchase a bit.

Anyone interested in a vacuum cleaner review? :P

Must be nice to be single. :P I have to keep my spending in check. The tablet is a "want" so it can wait for now. I'd rather buy it outright with cash than pull out the plastic, my gadget allowance is gone for this past month. :D Hopefully next paycheck! :D

It is nice to be single, but I'm sure you look at your children and disagree :)

I was thinking that. A trade off that's worth so much more than any gadget you could ever imagine. :D
