Heya, ppl. I was thinking last night that I need a new scanner. And I need a new PSU for my USB hub. Now, I already have a hungle under my desk, thanks to PSU's for every component connected to my PC (more or less) - and this got me to thinking - my PC's PSU is probably far more efficiant (85%, iirc) and has a whole +12v rail not being used (my PSU has 4). So why not build a few voltage regulator circuits for the components that need something other than +12v (or +5) and run everything off one PSU?

I was thinking of using something akin to this:

Any glaring downsides to this before I go visit maplins?

I think this is a little simple to get the best from the 317 CeeBee, have a look HERE I think something like this would be more stable as it uses a potential divider to adjust the regulator and it uses a fairly large capacitor across the in rails. The output voltage calculations should be easily in your grasp.

I think this is a great idea, so long as the PSU doesn't kick up. I cant see why it should though.
There are all sorts of goodies on this site, I hope it helps. :D

Why not get a car DC/DC Convertor? They use 12V :)

The fun is in making your own Spode, unless you can't be bothered, or don't have the time. Rolling your own gizmo's is so much more satisfying. :D

As much as I agree - I feel time is spent better on true creativity, rather than re-inventing the wheel :D

True, but at least it's your own wheel.

If the mood takes me, I'll happily re-invent the wheel if I'm getting enjoyment out of it. But in most cases, it is a little pointless...

It's a good thing we're all different, it makes for a more interesting life. Making my own allows me to change it's function, output voltage or what have you. When building audio equipment a great deal of creativity is needed, even with the PSU's.

I've tweaked electronic devices to my needs many times, this gives you exactly what you want, a better built and a more reliable end result, but as I said, we're all different. I still enjoy the challenge. Like hey, I have a good quality car charger for my phone. It's made and designed by the phone manufacturer and looking inside it is well made and well within spec. The only car charger I could get for my HI-MD player was awful. It was a good job I checked it before use, otherwise it may have damaged the player. A few mods and that's it, a decent charger that is well in spec and should be far more reliable.
So re inventing the wheel can be very advantageous.

I actually did, the other day - from a pound shop. I may very well still make my own though, just because I can...
