at PC World. My friend's laptop's (Dell Inspiron 1720) VGA port does not appear to be working. He has an external Samsung syncmaster 2223NW, which was working fine, however after unplugging the monitor to connect it to another computer, upon plugging it back in, it didn't work.
Both Ubuntu and Vista "see" the monitor is plugged in, and try to send it output at the correct resolution, and as far as they are concerned it's working - but the monitor does not wake up from standby.
The monitor is working fine - plugged it into Moofle (my computer) and it works without a hitch, so clearly something wrong with the laptop.
Any suggestions as to how it could be fixed - it's over a year old so the basic warranty has expired (Sod's law
).
Beanz,
I assume you are using the same data lead for all the machines? I had this problem with a KVM switch, this was due to the monitor drivers not being loaded. It didn't like the plug and play as default. I sorted it by using a CRT monitor (the only one to hand at the time) that did fire up and didn't mind running on the iiyama drivers. When I plugged the iiyama back in with it's own drivers installed all was well.
I don't know whether that helps, but apart from the lappie being faulty, I can't think of anything else.
I tried using 2 different data leads to rule that out - both did exactly the same. Seems to me that the laptop has inconveniently broken - but I just couldn't see why.
I guess the lappie could well be broken, but do try a different monitor if you can. This monitor worked fine for a while with the KVM switch, then I had the very same problem as you, an orange light and a "no signal" display.
