I'm moving to Canada for a year and have several hundred GB of data I'd like to keep safe till I return. Will it survive if I put my PC in the loft for a year or do I need to start thinking of alternatives?

I think your biggest concern will be moisture. So make sure it's packaged well :)

Here's a solution...get rid of some of your data :) hehe.

Thanks Huddy. Maybe I should print everything out. Then when I come back I just simply scan it in again.

I like it! Or maybe inscribe it onto wax cylinders?

Wax? I think stone lasts much longer. But you would have to start chiseling soon...

Can't you just make a backup of your data on an external drive and store that separated from your PC? Or is that not sufficient for your purpose?

Yes, Uncle, I'll be backing up on to separate drives too. I just wasn't too sure about how safe data was left on an unused hard drisk drive as it's something I've never done before. I think Spode has answered my question though.
