While out and about today, shopping for baby toys, I noticed that Toys R Us has the EeePC for only £219 to take away. A quick Google upon my arrival home, made it obvious that the price of these wonder machines has gone down recently - although stock is still an issue I imagine. The upside of giving Toys R Us a visit, is that they have them on display, so you can try it out first. Although they had locked down FireFox to stop people browsing the web, a quick "CTRL+ALT+T" loaded up a terminal, where I launched Konqueror to do some alternative browsing :)

Instead of plugging in the USB cable for my K800i phone, I decided to test drive the Bluetooth built into Ubuntu. Searching and bonding was a dream, but when trying to connect to browse the device, I was told there was nothing capable of dealing with "obex://". A quick visit to Synaptic, and I installed the "gnome-vfs-obexftp" package, which allowed me to browse my phone and nab the pictures I needed. I also noticed quite a few other utilities for dealing with phones, that I'll have a fiddle with at a later date.

that's got to be the worst point of sale I've ever seen. Makes the eeepc look like a kids toy with their comic book font! I couldn't help but giggle a litte bit about your 'hacking'. Surprised you didn't set it up as a remote client or place some adds on the screen for SpodesAbode :P

Mine's black. I think the white version looks worse, and I imagine gets grubbier a lot quicker.

If you had the white one, you could have some OS X skin and have all the Apple fanboys wetting their panties in excitement at a 'Macbook Mini'.

A new sub £100 computer! I guess you may have already seen Elonex's effort. It looks good to me.
I can only find details HERE I can't seem to preview this post, so I hope it comes out OK.

Interesting. I thought Elonex died? Must have missed something there.

I'd like to see what it's like in person. I might get in touch with them.

I thought Elonex had gone bust as well. Obviously not, perhaps they were bought out by another company? Whatever, they are producing this little beasty that can run Linux. At this price I wouldn't mind having one to play with.

Well, don't go rushing off just yet. There will be a lot of competition in this area. Who knows, I might even have something to do with it ;)

My enthusiasm was more pie in the sky really. At the moment I have better things to spend £100 on. If you can influence and advance the market in these little treasures Spode, more power to both your elbows. :D I'm actually quite exited by the prospect of millions (hopefully) of sub £100 computers running Linux. This can only better the prospects of a complete "idiots" version of a Linux distro a la Windows, would definitely be good for everyone, well I dare say Microsoft wouldn't like it much, but then they've had it their own way far too long.

Not only a kick up M$'s backside, but also some really useful portable tiny computers in peoples pockets and handbags. :D

Definitely designed well. That little thing would drop into any backpack. I could see in a couple of years where it could become every child's complete collection of school books. Never miss homework or lessons just plug in at home.

I cant tell what is what any more, your link just showed some pictures, hence "what who when where?" a bit more explanation would have helped, some of us are a little on the thick side, well me any way. :$

I wrongly assumed that a 9" Eee PC was just a bigger version, but unless I'm mistaken, these have more memory and other goodies than The 7" versions. They ought to have as the price has been hiked a fair bit. It's almost ruining the point of the small machine, as you can get a reasonable laptop/Windows for that price. Also you probably can't just slip it in to your pocket as easily.

To me the bigger Eee machines are a step backwards from the original concept, perhaps like your mod, more memory and a slightly bigger hard drive wouldn't go amiss, providing the thing wasn't too highly priced.

I was thinking about this. We recently had an election for presidential candidates. As usual there was levies for schools, and other public services on the ballot. My taxes are unbelievable, $2500. a year on top of the house payment. my house payment jumped over $100 last year for school, police and fire services. If we replaced all the text books with 1 of these little beauties, 5-7 text books at $60-$100. a pop. Instantly up datable. A central server processing all the classes. I'd much rather buy a $400. laptop for my kids than pass a levy that could cost me $100's year after year. Everyones looking to move to a work from home option in business. why should I pay for a school, buildings and teachers. When it could all be on the individual parents.

Bill, for primary education, yes the parents can do just as well as the teachers (well most good parents can). The secondary education, however, is much harder to teach without a deeper understanding of the subject. Children (like me) ask awkward questions that are not easy to simply google.

I don't believe that the majority American parents could home school. Most of our families have both parents working. School is also a place to learn social skills. What I was really pointing at is the cost to me as a home owner. We have large apartment complexes where a large number of the kids in our system reside. The apartments pay property taxes but not as much per kid as a normal home owner. I'd like to see the playing field leveled cost wise. Having these little laptops would cut costs.

Bill, I think that is where we are heading without a doubt, but like any technology it'll take 10 years for people to realise.

Coyote - I agree with your sentiment, however, as the first one illustrates, it is minutely bigger than the original EeePC, but the benefits you get for the extra size outweigh it. Have you seen one yet? It's tiny :D Originally I heard they would be price matching, so it's a pity it's more expensive. Give it a few months and it'll drop down though.
