Last night I went to see Sweeney Todd at the cinema. It's been quite a few years since I studied Sweeney Todd at school, to the extent that I couldn't remember anything about the plot, other than "kill people + make pies = profit", so the plot twists still managed to catch me by surprise. Directed by Tim Burton, starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, it's a recipe for success out of the box - unless of course you happen to dislike either of these people. For a full cast list, see IMDB.

I've been in six amateur musicals, but I've only seen a handful, because I quickly realised that musicals are a lot more fun to be in, than to watch. However, the combination of good acting (instead of ham) and well produced music made for pleasant viewing with catchy tunes. Lyrically, it was very well put together and I couldn't help but chuckle.

With Tim Burton at the helm, it's no wonder that it was particularly graphic, with its 18 certificate well deserved. Having been unfortunate enough to be subjected to the video of Ken Bigley being beheaded, it bought back memories I would sooner forget - hopefully this time I won't have any sleepless nights.

Overall I really enjoyed the film and I'd recommend watching it, but not for the squeamish.

I didn't think it was very good.
Take away the usual high quality acting of Depp and your left with a clumsy, flowery film where instead of the musical element creating a graceful and elegant augmentation to the film, in my view it only confused and alienated, a view perpetuated by the muffled muttering of those leaving the cinema at the end.
It's an effacious film and being a Tim Burton peice it was inevitably pulchritudinous and beautifully framed.

But it was just too clumsy for me.
