sorry don't have the link thing down pat yet. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=452170
Well, anything like that - it's usually a case of following exactly what they say - pasting in the console commands.
Just be on the lookout for any errors. Learning to deal with errors is essential. Sometimes these how-tos get out of date.
an apt based error occurred and installation was unsuccessful. what should I look for to determine what is causing this? I forgot to mention that I was using a program called automatix2.
Ah, yes, automatix. Well, does it have a log file? Is that the only information it gives you?
Check /var/log for log files.
I found the log files but am lost when it comes to interpreting what its telling me. I'm learning that there's an entire language thing here that I'm going to have to learn. Whats it called and where do I begin. Is there a rosetta stone program? Just a couple of days with ubuntu and I like it a lot. I managed to upgrade it to 7.10 last night. I've been playing with the desktop wallpaper and screensavers and things. I have also been browsing through the books I picked up and it seems that just about anythings possible. I have A practical guide to linux commands, editors and shell programming. Is this a good place to start?
From your phasing I get the feeling that automatix isn't a favorite?
No, not at all. A lot of people suggest Automatix - I just haven't used it myself yet.
Log files generaly give you a timestamp (useful for working out if you're looking at the correct error) then it's just a matter of interpreting the error. Often quoting the error verbatim in Google will bring up a thread somewhere where someone has the same issue.
Sounds like I can manage that thanks ![]()
Well I got the realplayer working with a little help. A friend of my sons uses ubuntu, he showed me how to do it. If I'm right then its just giving the sudo command followed by whatever it is you want to do move for ex. then directory then file. execute and you should have what you want. Am I heading in the right direction?
Well I thought we had it set so I could listen to bbc radio 2. Obviously that didn't work. Even as a stand alone player it would not play. I've been reading a practical guide to linux commands, editors and shell programming but its slow going. Hopefully somewhere along the line it will click.
I'm confused as to what you're having trouble with. "sudo" before a command merely tells it to run as root - which is often needed for installing programs for example.
I'm picking up a lot from this book, I hope to have a better idea of what its doing later this evening.
I used automatix and installed all the codecs with it. All media is playing fine on my system now. I did have to uninstall the codecs the first time via automatix and then reinstall and then everything worked.
