Huzzah! At last Palm's Centro is about to be launched in the UK! I have wanted this phone since it was first announced but it has been CDMA only and only available in the US until now. Oh, and it's also 3G :-)

I just hope that Orange will stock it. I recently ordered an HTC Touch Dual as an upgrade from Orange but coming from my Palm Treo 650 I couldn't get to grips with it. It was too slow and the interface non-intuitive (but that's WM6 for you). At last, my venerable Treo 650 may have a replacement...

I just upgraded my contract and got the new Nokia N95 8GB. I really like it, but I haven't started using it yet. I intend on setting up an LDAP contact server first, so I can synchronise with it.

Where will you be setting up your LDAP server, Spode? On a server of your own or at a host?

I'd really like to do that. I'm in a shared Apache hosting environment.

I will probably need to get a different phone from Orange because it doesn't look like it will be available any time soon, and I'm due an upgrade now. I thought of getting a phone and giving it to Beanz (he's also on Orange but PAYG) so I am looking at the Nokia N73. I am not sure what to think of the N95; I would also need to pay for it, I think, so I probably won't bother.

I'll be setting it up on my Web Server. The idea being that then I have a central contact database for E-mail/Phone, instead of maintaining two. Quite honestly, I've been meaning to do it for years. I've got the LDAP server setup, but I haven't set up any synchronization or authentication. When I have, I'll be sure to blog it.

Nothing stopping you from setting up a local LDAP server. And then if you need it externally, port forward it to your router and get yourself a free sub-domain name pointing to you - if need be using Dynamic DNS.

Hmm, thanks - I look forward to reading the blog entry then.

Is this kind of thing possible in a shared hosting environment?

If they offer an LDAP service, sure. But probably not. Unless you are lucky enough to have a Virtual Server with root access.

For any of you guys with WiFi enabled phones or those with free data on their contract I can thoroughly recommend using Fring if you need a mobile VoIP and IM client.
The Symbian version on my N95 integrates nicely with the phone so Skype calls are made and picked up in almost the same way as a normal call. The noise reduction/conression seems a bit over zealous sometimes, meaning all sound cuts out when the other person is not talking or talks too quietly and I keep thinking I've been cut off.
I really like the fact that I can keep in touch with my Dad in Wales for free without turning a computer on.

Oh and you can run several VoIP and IM services simultaneously.

Why do I have to wait until THURSDAY for the Centro to be released? Hurry up, Palm. Grr. *jumps up and down for a bit*

I'll probably have to wait a few weeks after ordering it on the release date before I get it as well.

I use my phone mailnly for calling but I just added an internet plan to it. I am not totally convinced I want to keep it though. I need to upgrade my phone, my Samsung A640 is showing its age.

OK, who uses their phone to control their secret army of robotic gnomes?
