I can't get the lan working on my abit a8n 32x board. I suspect the boards defective. It shows a firewire connection. As a temporary fix I wondered if I could connect my computers together with a firewire cable and network them to access the internet on the abit computer.

Check it isn't disabled in the BIOS and that the driver is installed correctly. You'd be amazed at how Windows can randomly just disable something...

Yes I know what your talking about, I tried changing things in the bios, I reloaded the drivers and finally did a fresh loading of xp on a new format on the drive. I remembered seeing a few negatives ratings on the board because of the lan controller. So I'll send the board back to abit.

I have a USB ethernet device that is detected by XP without any drivers. Very useful for doing those driver downloads :)

A friend at work suggested it might be quicker and easier to just pick up a network adapter card and plug it in than to try and rma the board. any thoughts on what kind of card.

Very true. Well, it depends on your use, I have a bunch of £2.50 Realtek cards in my cupboard that I use for things like that. It won't make a lot of difference really! The PCI bus will limit anything faster.

Cool I didn't want to rma now that I have it dual booting. I'll pick something linux compatible.

Can't really go wrong with a cheap Realtek. Do you do a lot of file transfers, or is this for net only?

I picked up a Rosewell for $10.00. After a little more research I found that even though I loaded the drivers from the disk that comes with the board. They don't install. The add or remove programs show the drivers but no file size. In the device manager almost none of the nvidea devices have a driver listed. I downloaded the files from abit to a cd now all I need to do is figure out how to install them. ^o

You can probably use generic nForce drivers.

The guy over at the abit forum gave the link to the right driver. I downloaded it to my main rig burned a copy and ran it on the a8n 32x board. It open the install wizard ran through the install. I rebooted and still nothing. :x $149.00 for this board and it's been a real pain to work with. I'm thinking about rma'ing the board there's got to be a defect. This is the first time in 4 builds that I've had any problems like this.

Quite frankly, I think motherboards have become far too expensive. The most important decision is what chipset, then all your paying for is features you'll never use and overclocking ability - which most boards now have, and no longer offers the value for money that it used to.

I'd sooner buy mid-range and upgrade regularly, than bother with the top-end stuff.

Hell, I'm running Netburst still! I spent years telling people not to buy it, and I end up with it at home, just because it's all I could blag :P

As fast as things drop in price no matter what you buy a month later its cheaper, or gone with something else out there as the next best.

 I finally got it sorted out. I had the right drivers but the bios had reverted to the default settings or something. I reset the bios tried loading the drivers again and bingo. :D
