    To quote this Inquirer article:

    The Inquirer

IE8 will have three rendering modes: the new standards-compliant mode, the IE7 rendering engine and an option for displaying older Web sites. Sites that want IE8 to use its IE7 engine will have to add a tag to their code.

My hat is off to them, that's a quite a neat way of doing things and at last things will hopefully be a lot easier. Of course, if you add tags for IE8 to know it should be rendering as IE7, will IE7 know too, or will it use the IE8 code?

While on the topic of the The Inquirer, it's sad to see that Mike Magee is leaving - but I'm sure this isn't the last we'll see of him :)

I really must gather together my Inquirer Ramblings. Especially the one where I suggested before long we'd all be carrying our OS around on a USB flash drive...

Well, call me a pessimist but just because it'll be in "standards compliant mode" doesn't necessarily mean it'll be standards compliant, because that's a relative term, and we all know MS and "standards" If anything, I hope having two major revisions out above IE6 will finally put not supporting IE6 any longer firmly onto the horizon.

Yes, this is true. I didn't want to seem TOO pessimistic though :D

We managed a good workaround so we don't need to support IE6 on a new website; since it's hosted in Durham and the Durham network officially supports only IE7 and SeaMonkey (oddly) we don't need to support IE6!

    Sounds like bliss :)

This is definetly an improvement over their previous suggesting of IE8 needing a tag to be in standards mode and instead using the IE7 engine! Thankyou MS!

It's supported, I gather, because once upon a time, many moons ago, Netscape was the official browser of choice. Which then became Mozilla Suite when that went to v1.0, and now SeaMonkey.

IE8 features from the horses mouth: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/ie8/readiness/NewFeatures.htm

WebSlices is a complete rip of the functionality that Leopard+Safari 3 offers...

Favorites bar: wow, amazing, really

Well, I fired it up to check things out. From what SirKent is saying, a lot of websites are unhappy. I'm not going to start fiddling with anything until the final release though.

thinkbikes.com looks perfect - better than it did in IE6, but then I coded all that CSS by hand.

thinksecretsanta.com looks perfect, also all CSS coded by hand.

spodesabode.com looks pretty close, with a few rendering issues, that I hope will be fixed by Vanilla. Nothing that breaks functionality thankfully. I think one of the issues might be my own fault :O

archive.spodesabode.com looks dead on, even if it is done with tables :)
