While redesigning the scrollbars in JournoTwit - I wanted the ability to click on an arrow and have it automatically scroll. Through Google I found this mousehold plugin - which just so happens to have been written by Remy Sharp - a chap I met whilst doing the Twitterati photoshoot for Wired UK Magazine.

However, it lacked a key element for me - a delay. Just like on your keyboard, when you hold down a key, there is a delay before that key starts repeating itself. So I took Remy's work and modified it slightly. I also re-did the code tabbing and added some comments to explain how it works. I have a rather messy tabbed code layout - but I find it easier to see where functions open and close.

You can download my modified version here.

I found my way over at the Digital Summer event a couple of days ago where Kingston were showing off their latest wares. I had a Wi-Drive thrust into my hands to have a play. My curiousity got the best of me and I wasted a good working day playing around / hacking with it. (Invoice is in the post Maggie...)

The Device

Fairly pretty to look at, it's light and about the same size as a phone. I can't help but feel they would have been better off making it fatter and shorter, but its curved edges means it fits into pockets nicely.

So, plug it in by USB and it's a 32GB flash drive with middling performance. Unplug it and switch it on and it becomes a wireless hotspot for accessing your content. You can then connect to this using up to three devices. It's designed with phones/tablets in...

Day 1 - Pre-show Thoughts

One of my biggest regrets as a technology journalist was not going out to MWC (Mobile World Congress). I figured at some point, I'd get the opportunity and this year was it.

ThinkWall has been growing from strength to strength, and thanks to the UKTI I'm going to be running ThinkWalls on their booth (you can see the bespoke design above), as well as at the UKTJPR party on Wednesday, showing relevant twitter streams to those events.

The whole ThinkWall system is configured to run through the cloud - so that in combination with LogMeIn, allows me to look after a whole host of walls from my Xoom tablet. So I won't be breaking my back lugging around a laptop!

So I had this amazing (!) idea of doing a Christmas Album this year, but thanks to excessive drinking, Skyrim and a cold this never really happened. I managed to record two Christmas classics (which were essentially Karaoke) and a reading of "The Owl and the Pussy Cat" in a stupid voice.

Possibly the best thing I managed to do (and that says a lot) is do a cover version of "Rocket Man" by Elton John, but using alternative lyrics to become "Snow Man". It's chilled out and done on acoustic guitar. My lovely house mate James Looney did the guitar work.

The lyrics, for those want to be spared of my ever diminishing vocal skills, are as follows:

Got packed from snow last night, pretty tight
A bunch of kids, maybe twelve or ten
And I came to life, thanks to them
A carrot for a nose and a bowler hat
A scarf not...

Being single since May, I've been trying to get myself looking nice and trim as I parade myself back on the market (form an orderly queue please ladies!). Over the past 3 years I've slowly put a few pounds on (not excessive amounts - but enough that I notice) and I've realised part of that reason for that is that I now drive. I used to ride my bike for so many tiny journeys that I no longer do. Trials riding is good exercise but doesn't give as much of a cardio work out as you'd expect.

I've been lecturing part-time at Ravensbourne College and being on the O2 - you have to use their O2's car park facilities. At £10 a day, I've started parking a 10 minute cycle away and flinging a bike in the back of the car. I managed to build myself a fixie out of spare...

Living in Gravesend (for my sins) does have the benefit of being the warmest place in the UK - or so they say. Only living here since May I've not exactly taken full advantage of that. Although I have taken full advantage of the excellent trials riding, the pretty good wooden skate park and the lovely views of the Thames. We'll just ignore the 24 hour McDonalds and the night life.

It is now November and I still don't have my central heating turned on. This is the first time I've lived in a flat - and a poorly converted one at that (although very nice, and very big). Right now I'm getting enough heat from the flat below, and in some ways the flat above (think about it) that my flat is at a rather comfortable temperature. In fact - I'm actually getting a little too warm at night!

So the right piece finally started cutting in and out often enough that I had to do something about it. Anyone with a keen memory will remember me repairing these previously by attacking them with a scalpel, resoldering and then gluing together.
The Upgrade

So Ubuntu 11.10 came out this month and figured I'd have a play as I'd heard that Unity was seriously improved.

I was previously running 11.04 and the upgrade wouldn't work for me. Not only that, but it gave me an error message that didn't help me at all - merely that it couldn't find an upgrade path. No "see this log" or "these packages are causing the issues", instead "E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks". Mats Lindh offered up a solution to his problem which didn't work for me.

So I decided I may as well do a reinstall. One of the nice things about keeping most of my important stuff on my file server, and the rest in the cloud is that doing a reinstall is usually pretty painless.

However, like all good boys I did make a backup. I booted up to the Ubuntu USB stick, mounted my file server and...

Strangely, I've not been able to attend a social, but I have been to several of the meets.
The Google redirect virus is really nasty this year it seems, or is it just me? how many here have had issues with this in the past? It's struck my computers twice now and I'm getting sick of it. After doing some research I found out that it's a deep rootkit virus called Alureon that passes your firewall because it jumps aboard a printer process driver of some sort, so the likelihood of anti-virus ever catching it is slim.

I've even read reports of people having their financial information stolen as a result of it.
When coding PHP, until recently, I've been using a press review copy of Dreamweaver that found its way to me. Although legal, I've been meaning to stop using it for a while, as I use very little of its features and I felt hypocritical using something I wouldn't recommend to other people. The reason I like Dreamweaver, is because it has a good file manager that supports editing remotely via ftp and sftp, it highlights code well, and displays a functions parameters as you type it in, which has saved me a lot of time. None of these features are particularly complex, but finding a multiplatform open source alternative has been pretty tricky.

I am very picky about what software I choose, as I feel they should be available on both Windows and Linux platforms. Open Source should be about choice, and that includes the choice to run Windows. I don't...

I stepped into the realm of real smart phones late this past summer. I purchased a Samsung Epic 4G. Also known as a member of the Galaxy S lineup. The screen is incredible and using it is just fun. I have less and less need for my desktop PC. I can do almost anything on the phone that I do with my desktop. There are some exceptions, but for general use, it works great. The physical keyboard helps but composing email and text messages with swype (or whatever Samsung calls there version of the app) is just so easy!

After only a short stint in Belvedere, Hannah and I are moving again. It was never the intention to live in this area, but we couldn't originally find anything we wanted in Orpington. After a somewhat lucky break - our house developed a mould problem, allowing us to break the tenancy early. After a fair amount of hunting, we found a lovely property in the Petts Wood/Orpington area and we are moving in this Saturday!

The property has just been completely refurbished - brand new boiler, kitchen, carpets etc. It's got a nice little driveway and garage (currently renting one externally - so that's a money saver), garden and my office will be the biggest I've had to date!

It almost feels too nice a property. Somehow my furniture just won't feel good enough to be seen in it! I'm sure I'll find a way to smarten things up...

I run a Windows VM on my file server that I control using LogMeIn (which I can't recommend enough) but I often forget to start the VM, and being headless - there is nothing really to remind me. VirtualBox doesn't come with any scripts to start/stop a VM with the computer and a lot of the suggestions I've seen are rather complex. This is a really simple script that starts the VM with your machine and then saves the state on shut down.

So first, create a new file in /etc/init.d - I'll call mine SpodeVM. I personally do this in an terminal using nano, but you could use gEdit. Remember that you'll need root privileges to write to that folder, so "sudo nano /etc/init.d/SpodeVM".

Inside the file, you'll want the following. Change "spode" for the user that your VirtualBox VM is owned by, and change "My VM Name" for the...

Top 10 Broadband awards are always fun, and a great insight as to what's going on in the Broadband world. I found myself attending these awards on Tuesday, at the Paramount club on New Oxford Street.

You can read the awards for yourself on their website. I'm currently using Virgin 50Mbit and it wins "Fastest Broadband" without a sweat. It's the only broadband I've ever had that gives you *more* than what they quote, rather than less. It's also nice to see a hat tip to Three having the best value mobile broadband - another company really trying to push broadband in Britain forward. BT winning an award for Innovation though? They have to be the least innovative company I can think of..

I see a fair few celebs whilst out and about at press events and very few of them do I ever bother to talk to. Top10 was an exception...

I've had knee issues for the past 3 years, which have been classified by most as Patella Tendonitis. I've been given the run around by several doctors and physios and if anyone remembers - last year I even had a ligament in my ankle intentionally torn and casted up, just to try and help it.

Finally, after constant hounding, I got an MRI. While waiting for the results, I decided to take some time off the bike to see if it helped. I've been off for 2 months and although it's better, it's not perfect. Finally, I went to see the consultant today and he concluded that the tendon itself was fine, but rather it was the infrapatellar fat pad (sometimes known as Hoffa's pad) that was damaged. He felt this was in fact irritating the tendon, causing symptoms of tendonitis.

So what's the plan? I'm having key-hole surgery where...

Working with Ben Cardy is awesome - I tell him things, he does it, I smile and the whole world smiles with me. Well, not quite as cool as that - but he's damned good at what he does and has been the design mastermind behind my latest projects.

As Dave is leaving Think Bikes, leaving me in charge - I decided a bit of a revamp was in order and had a new logo designed. This is what we came up with (in this image, we were experimenting with some different colours...).

Certainly it's a lot more lively than the current logo, which is thinkbikes.com in Tahoma But whilst we were there I mentioned I had an idea for a t-shirt. 5 minutes later, the design was sitting in front of me!

I spent a while researching various print on demand t-shirt companies and found that spreadshirt.co.uk had the best pricing...
